Titling a Car in Minnesota After Moving From Another State
Last verified: October 2026 against Minnesota DVS and Minnesota Revenue sources
New Minnesota residents have 60 days to register a passenger vehicle or motorcycle, as long as its current registration has not expired.
Here is what to do and what to bring.
Step by step
- 1
Mark the 60-day deadline
Register within 60 days of moving. If your current registration has expired, register right away.
- 2
Gather your documents
Bring your current title, the names and addresses of any lienholders, the current odometer reading, valid identification, and your insurance company, policy number, and expiration date.
- 3
If a lender has your title
You can register with your most recent registration card (expired less than a year), a copy of the title marked “COPY,” or a confirmation of ownership. Minnesota issues a title only when the current out-of-state title is submitted.
- 4
Check whether tax is due
If you bought and titled the vehicle in your name in the other state at least 60 days before, no tax is due. Otherwise you pay 6.875%, with credit for sales tax paid to the other state.
- 5
Register in person or by mail
Register at a deputy registrar office or mail the application to Driver and Vehicle Services. The registration tax is $10 plus 1.575% of the original MSRP, reduced by age, and $30 from the 11th year.
What to bring
- Your current out-of-state title (or the alternatives if a lender holds it)
- Lienholder names and addresses
- Current odometer reading
- Valid identification
- Insurance company, policy number, and expiration date
- Payment for title fees, registration tax, and any sales tax due
