Titling a Car in Utah After Moving From Another State
Last verified: October 2026 against Utah DMV and Tax Commission sources
New Utah residents have 60 days to transfer their titles and registrations.
Here is what to do and what to bring.
Step by step
- 1
Mark the 60-day deadline
Transfer your title and registration within 60 days of moving to Utah.
- 2
Gather ownership documents
Bring your original out-of-state title or out-of-state registration. Either is enough to get started, and lets you get a temporary permit while you gather the rest.
- 3
Get the VIN inspected
A VIN inspection is required for every vehicle titled in Utah for the first time.
- 4
Get an emissions test if your county requires it
If you live in Salt Lake, Davis, Weber, Cache, or Utah county, an emissions inspection may be required.
- 5
Apply and pay the fees
Complete Form TC-656 with ID for each owner. Fees include the $6 title, the $72.50 registration fee, and the uniform age-based fee for your model year. Electric vehicles add a $180 road usage charge for 2026.
