How to Gift a Car in Oregon
Last verified: November 2026 against Oregon DMV sources
Oregon has no sales tax on private vehicle transfers, so a gifted car owes only the title fee and, if needed, registration.
Here is how to transfer the title.
Step by step
- 1
Have the giver sign the title
The giver signs the original title over to you. Include an odometer disclosure if one is required.
- 2
Collect any lien releases
If an earlier lender is listed, get the original lien release.
- 3
Complete the title application
Use the guided DMV2U application for a passenger vehicle.
- 4
Apply within 30 days
DMV charges a late fee ($25, or $50 after 60 days) when a title application for an Oregon-titled vehicle comes more than 30 days after the sale. Apply within 30 days to be safe.
- 5
Pay the fees
Pay the title fee for the vehicle’s MPG tier ($101 to $116, or $192 for all-electric), plus registration if the plates are not current.
What to bring
- The original title, signed over to you
- An odometer disclosure, if required
