Titling a Car in Tennessee After Moving From Another State
Last verified: October 2026 against Tennessee Department of Revenue sources
If you move to Tennessee from another state, register your vehicle within 30 days of the move.
A personal car you bring with a genuine move is not subject to Tennessee use tax.
Step by step
- 1
Register within 30 days
A person who moves to Tennessee from another state should register their vehicle within 30 days of the move. Students from other states are one of the limited exceptions.
- 2
Know that no use tax is due on your car
A person relocating to Tennessee in a genuine change of residence can bring a personal vehicle without paying Tennessee use tax.
If you bought the car out of state and moved before titling it, you pay that state’s tax, plus the difference if Tennessee’s rate is higher.
- 3
Gather your documents
Bring proof of identification and proof of residency, your most current out-of-state registration, and your out-of-state title, or the lienholder’s name and address so the title can be requested.
- 4
Apply with your county clerk
Submit the application for title and registration at your local county clerk’s office.
- 5
Pay the fees
The title is $14 and the standard plate is $26.50 a year ($19.50 for a motorcycle). All-electric vehicles add $200 ($274 in 2027), and hybrids and plug-in hybrids add $100. Many counties add a wheel tax.
