Titling a Car in Oklahoma After Moving From Another State

Last verified: October 2026 against Service Oklahoma sources

After moving to Oklahoma, you process your tag, title, and tax at Service Oklahoma (N Classen in Oklahoma City) or a licensed operator.

Here is what to do and what to bring.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Get Oklahoma insurance

You need proof of Oklahoma insurance to register.

  2. 2

    Complete Form 701-6

Fill out Form 701-6, the Application for Oklahoma Certificate of Title.

  3. 3

Bring the vehicle for a VIN inspection

A vehicle titled in another state usually needs a VIN inspection by a Service Oklahoma agent (N Classen location only) or a licensed operator. The fee is $4.

  4. 4

Visit Service Oklahoma or a licensed operator

Bring your out-of-state title, Form 701-6, your driver’s license, proof of Oklahoma insurance, and the vehicle. Your fees are finalized at the visit, and you receive a standard plate and decal.

  5. 5

    Know where your title goes

If there is a lien, the Oklahoma title is sent to your lienholder. Otherwise it is mailed to you.

What to bring

  • Your out-of-state title
  • Form 701-6 (Application for Oklahoma Certificate of Title)
  • Your driver’s license

Oklahoma taxes a used vehicle at $20 on the first $1,500 of value and 3.25% of the rest (excise tax), plus 1.25% sales tax on the price.

Registration shown assumes the vehicle was first registered in its model year. A tire tax (for cars, $2.90 per tire) and, for vehicles titled in another state, a $4 VIN inspection fee are extra.

Electric vehicles pay $210 a year more and plug-in hybrids $112.

On our reading, a motorcycle pays only the Motor Fuels Tax Fee of $100 for electric or $30 for hybrid (47 O.S. 1132.7), because the other fee covers vehicles with at least four wheels (68 O.S. 6511). Confirm with Service Oklahoma.

County & Local Tax Note: Oklahoma charges a motor vehicle excise tax of $20 on the first $1,500 of a used vehicle’s value and 3.25% of the rest, plus a 1.25% sales tax on the price. Both are statewide and paid when the title is transferred.
