Titling a Car in Louisiana After Moving From Another State
Last verified: October 2026 against Louisiana OMV and LDR sources
Louisiana requires road use tax on vehicles brought into the state for use on its highways, paid before a Louisiana title or registration is issued. Many new residents pay no more than $90.
Here is what to do and what to bring.
Step by step
- 1
Complete the vehicle application
Fill out the Vehicle Application (DPSMV1799), including Section F, the Out-of-State Declaration, with the date the vehicle came into Louisiana.
- 2
Bring your out-of-state title
Bring the original out-of-state title if there is no lien. If a lienholder holds it, bring a copy of the title or a registration showing the lienholder.
- 3
Check whether the $90 limit applies
State and local use tax is capped at $90 if you paid sales or use tax in another state, the vehicle was registered in your name there, it is mainly for personal use, and you register it within 90 days of bringing it into Louisiana.
- 4
Pay within 40 days
Tax is due within 40 days of the date the vehicle came into the state, or penalty and interest apply. Otherwise road use tax is based on the vehicle’s value, not its price.
- 5
Bring ID and Louisiana-authorized insurance
Bring each owner’s driver’s license or ID (front and back for out-of-state cards) and, for a plate, proof of insurance from a company authorized in Louisiana. Fees are the $68.50 title, $8 handling, and the plate.
