How to Gift a Car in Arizona

Last verified: October 2026 against Arizona DOR and Arizona Revised Statutes sources

Arizona does not tax a transfer between individuals, so a gift costs the same as any private transfer: the title and registration fees and the vehicle license tax.

Here is how to transfer the car.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Sign the title over

The giver signs the title over to you with the assignment and warranty of title and the odometer disclosure.

  2. 2

    The giver keeps the plate

The giver moves the plate to another vehicle or turns it in within 30 days. You register the car in your name.

  3. 3

    Apply within 15 days

Apply for the title and registration within 15 days after the title is signed over to you.

  4. 4

    Check emissions testing

Vehicles registered in the Phoenix (area A) and Tucson (area B) areas need an emissions inspection.

  5. 5

    Pay the fees

There is no sales tax. Pay the $4 title fee, $8 registration ($9 for a motorcycle), the $1.50 air quality fee, and the vehicle license tax.

What to bring

  • The title, signed over to you
  • The odometer disclosure
  • MVD’s title and registration application
  • Your identification
  • An emissions inspection, if you live in the Phoenix or Tucson area
  • Payment for the fees and vehicle license tax

Official Notice & Statutory Disclaimers

Estimates only, not tax or legal advice. Verify with Arizona MVD or an authorized third party provider.

The vehicle license tax is estimated from the list price you enter and the model year. MVD counts the years from the vehicle’s first registration, so your bill can differ.

Motorcycles also pay the vehicle license tax, which this estimate does not include for them.

Emissions testing fees in the Phoenix and Tucson areas are not included.

County & Local Tax Note: Arizona does not charge sales or use tax on a casual sale between individuals. The yearly cost is the vehicle license tax (VLT), which is figured from the original list price and the vehicle’s age.
